Here's the old framing that separated the kitchen from the living and dining rooms. Note the light streaming in through the spaces in the roof deck boards. There was a drop down ceiling there, so the the original builder didn't bother to continue the tongue and groove paneling into that area.
 A new post and thickened concrete footing hold the LVL engineered beam that spans the ceiling ridge.
 Note the beam with hardware connections and the new tongue and groove paneling above the kitchen.
